Дополнительная информация: Среди самых значимых альтернативных рок-групп начала 90-х годов, Smashing Pumpkins подверглись наименьшему влиянию рок-андеграунда, будучи, в некотором роде, независимы и от независимой сцены. Лидер группы Билли Коргэн сформировал особое звучание, использовав элементы прогрессивного рока, хэви-метала, готического рока, психоделии и дрим-попа, в результате чего получился многослойный, мощный саунд, ведомый плавающим ревом гитарного дисторшена. Дополняющая звучание мученическая лирика, повествующая о стандартных для альтернативной музыки юношеских проблемах отчужденности, несчастливого детства, об одиночестве и разнообразных комплексах. В отличие от других групп того времени, Билл Коргэн был достаточно умен, чтобы знать чего он хочет и как этого добиться. Smashing Pumpkins стали эталоном успеха в мире альтернативной рок-музыки начала 90-х, т. к. другая мега-группа того времени, Nirvana, была излишне разрушительна, а Pearl Jam старательно избегали атрибутов успеха. Коргэн никогда не уклонялся от положения рок-звезды, хотя он и прикрывал это якобы ироническими жестами. Своим успехом Smashing Pumpkins помогли открыть для миллионов слушателей хэви-метал и оркестрированный прогрессивный рок и способствовали тому, что альтернативный рок приблизился к року 70-х, во всяком случае, в глазах радио-ведущих и мейнстрим-аудитории. В отличие от многих своих современников, Smashing Pumpkins оказались в состоянии длительное время противостоять внутренним разногласиям и проблемам, издавая новые альбомы и продвигая их в концертных турах, заслужив тем самым звание самой долгоживущей и успешной альтернативной группой начала 90-х.
